Slack Channel Muting

Mute channels and direct messages

For greater control over your notifications, you can mute specific channels and direct messages (DMs) with members, apps, and bots. Muting conversations allows you to read new messages when you want, without receiving notifications for new activity.

How muting works

  • Muted channels and DMs appear grayed out at the bottom of your channel list.
  • You’ll see a numbered badge 1 next to conversations you’ve muted in your sidebar if you’ve been mentioned or received a DM.
  • The  Threads view at the top of your sidebar will appear bold if someone creates or replies to a thread from any message you’ve sent in a muted conversation.

Note: It’s not possible to mute notifications from Slackbot.

Mute a channel

Desktop:

  1. Open the channel you’d like to mute.
  2. Click the  details icon in the top right.
  3. Click  More.
  4. Select Mute [#channel name].

Mobile:

  1. Open the channel you’d like to mute.
  2. Click the  details icon in the top right.
  3. Tap the toggle next to Mute Channel.

Mute a DM

Muting a DM will mute notifications for that conversation, but won’t affect messages sent by a specific member, app, or bot in other conversations.

Desktop:

Mute a DM with members

  1. Open the DM you’d like to mute.
  2. Click the  details icon in the top right.
  3. Click  More.
  4.  Select Mute conversation.

Mute a DM with apps or bots

Apps and bots connected to your workspace can send you messages in dedicated DMs. To mute a DM with an app or bot, use the steps below:

  1. Click  Apps at the top of your left sidebar. If you don’t see this option, click  More to find it.
  2. Search for and select the app or bot you’d like to mute.
  3. Click the  details icon in the top right.
  4. Click  More.
  5.  Select Mute this app.

Mobile:

Mute a DM with members

  1. Open the DM you’d like to mute.
  2. Click the  details icon in the top right.
  3. Tap the toggle next to Mute Conversation.

Mute a DM with apps or bots

Apps and bots connected to your workspace can send you messages in dedicated DMs. To mute a DM with an app or bot, use the steps below:

  1. Tap the  Home tab at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap Jump to and search for the app or bot you’d like to mute.
  3. Click the  details icon in the top right.
  4. Tap the toggle next to Mute Conversation.
